Overkit_

One link. Everything a promoter needs to decide.

Taking underground pro music artists to the next level.

Overkit_ is a web platform that turns an artist’s story, music, videos, photos, and technical docs into a single press kit, shared with one link. Promoters and press get the full picture at first glance, and artists look as professional as they sound.

Challenge

Build a complete product from scratch, as a team of one.

I spent my previous job building with Next.js and shadcn/ui, which kept me close to the Vercel ecosystem. That’s how I found v0 two years ago, when it could only turn prompts into interactive prototypes of my designs. I watched these tools get dramatically better every few months, and I started experimenting on my own.

Then I attended Vercel’s Prompt to Production event in my city and saw how much tighter the GitHub integration had become. That was the push I needed to stop experimenting and build something real.

I knew what to build because of the scene I live in. Music has been part of my life since my teens, through bands and video. In 2023, I committed to music video and photography, and spending every weekend in the industry showed me a gap that underground artists, and sometimes bigger ones, keep running into: presenting themselves professionally to the people who book them.

Research

Press kits, tech riders and stage plots have been essential to the music business for years, but the tools built for them were complex and outdated. So artists made their own PDFs in Word, PowerPoint or design tools, working out layouts and requirements with no guidance. Every kit looked different, was hard to keep up to date, and rarely showed who the artist really was.

That gap matters more every year. Linktree gave artists a simple, consistent home for their fans, but the professional side of the industry still has no standard: nothing made for the producers, promoters, venues and booking teams who decide who gets booked.

The pages stack up out of line and the file name keeps changing.Minimal animation of the press kit problem, opening on the words No standard. Feedback & Redesign

I ran moderated usability tests, remote and in person, with solo artists, band members, and promoters. Three findings shaped the redesign:

Remote usability session on a video call. The Overkit_ editor is shared on screen, next to the moderator and a participant, both waving.
A second remote session, with the Overkit_ editor and its completion tips on screen, the moderator, and two participants.

01

Onboarding

New users needed guidance from the start, so a first-run tour now shows how saving and publishing work.
Step 3 of the Overkit_ first-run tour, Save & Publish. In its demo, new text is typed into Our Sound and saves on its own as a draft, while What Promoters See keeps the old text. Publish is pressed, the kit goes live and what promoters see updates.

02

Autosave

Changes now save automatically, replacing the “save draft, then publish” flow.
Overkit_ toolbar with Save draft and a disabled Publish button. Save draft is pressed, loads and saves, which unlocks Publish, and Publish is pressed next.
Before · Save draft / Publish
Overkit_ toolbar with no save button. The status moves between Saving and Saved on its own, and Publish is the only press.
After · Autosave state

03

Post-publish toast

After publishing, a toast offers “Copy link” and “Open” so artists can share right away.
Publish is pressed in the Overkit_ toolbar. A toast rises from the bottom saying “Your press kit is now live!”, offers no next step, and slides away.
Before · Publish, no next step

After · Toast: Copy link + Open

Conclusion

Overkit_ has grown from Alpha to Early Access, shaped at every step by the people who use it, from informal conversations and my own assumptions to documented, moderated usability tests.

I’m building this on my own, but not alone. The DIY spirit of the music community is why this can work: a tool that serves artists at every level, and helps underground professionals show the world how professional they already are.
